America's Most Stolen Car

The Dodge Charger Hellcat

America's most stolen car, Indianapolis Attorney

Hellcats are popular with thieves. They are America’s most stolen car. The Highway Loss Data Institute, a division of the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), was genuinely astonished by the sheer volume of Dodge Charger Hellcats stolen between 2020 and 2022. According to a recent study by HLDI Senior Vice President Matt Moore, "If you own a Hellcat, you better check your driveway."

In the aforementioned two years, there were 6,128 Charger Hellcat theft claims, according to HLDI. This equates to 255 claims per month over a period of 24 months, which is over three times more than the 2,197 claims submitted for the Dodge Charger (with a Hemi), the second-most stolen vehicle.

What about the third, though? The Infiniti Q50 received 878 claims in total. Each vehicle had 100 theft claims made for it between 2020 and 2022. This indicates that the Charger Hellcat was stolen more than 60 times as often as usual. HLDI emphasizes that these figures only account for reports of complete car theft and do not take into account claims for stolen components like wheels or catalytic converters.

Sadly, the situation is just growing worse. The Infiniti Q60 had an average of two thefts per 1,000 insured vehicle years (a metric frequently used to rank performance in an environment) between 2017 and 2019, making it the most stolen vehicle. Between 2020 and 2022, there were 25 thefts of the Charger Hellcat on average per 1,000 insured vehicle years.

On the other hand, with only three claims each, the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y were the least stolen vehicles during the same period. Teslas were stolen so infrequently for unknown reasons, but Sentry Mode or even the fact that they are so connected and trackable could be to blame. Or perhaps burglars simply don't want Teslas. However, it seems that electric automobiles are rarely stolen, which makes sense given that there aren't nearly as many of them as conventional vehicles.

So if you own a Charger Hellcat or really any big V8-powered Dodge muscle car, you might want to visit your local dealer for some additional theft prevention. And if you are charged with stilling a Charger, then contact the Law Office of Mark Nicholson.
