The holidays are here and I hope everyone is able to spend some quality time being with people they love and doing what really matters.
We were set for a trial in November but it ended before it really started. The prosecutor caused a mistrial during voir dire. A mistrial occurs when 1) a jury is unable to reach a verdict and there must be a new trial with a new jury; 2) there is a serious procedural error or misconduct that would result in an unfair trial, and the judge stops the case without a decision on the merits and schedules a new trial.
In this case, it was definition number 2 that occurred.

Take care, and we hope you had a Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, and have a Happy New Year!
Seems like in recent months there have been several high-profile cases going on at the same time in the country. I'm thinking of Kyle Rittenhouse, Ahmaud Arbery (who actually was not on trial), Unite The Right, Ghislaine Maxwell, Kim Potter, Jussie Smollett, and Elizabeth Holmes (Theranos). I found it interesting that the majority of the high-profile cases had a common theme or race. Of course, it could be argued that if you mix sex, race, or money you have the makings of a high-profile case.
The Rittenhouse case sparked one of two reactions: blatant outrage or satisfaction. The Arbery case and Jussie Smollett was an example of law enforcement dropping the ball in the beginning. It appears their judgment was originally clouded by money in one case and racism in the other.
It will be interesting to see how all the remaining trials turn out.
