MMA fighter Alice Ardelean has made the news recently for her decision to leave her gym after she was harassed for her OnlyFans account. This story is not just about an athlete fighting for her right to make money and stay safe; it’s a story of resilience and unnecessary harassment. We can all learn something from Alice's experience and others like her.
Alice Ardelean, an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) hopeful, makes over $12,000 per month from OnlyFans, but the wives of her training partners were not pleased with her revealing photos.
On one side, Ardelean’s fans have argued that they should be allowed to express their sexuality freely on social media without getting kicked out of a mixed martial arts (MMA) gym. Additionally, other fighters have criticized the gym for kicking a fellow athlete for something they posted on social media.
On the other side are the wives of some male MMA fighters who complained to the gym owners and wanted her removed. The wives also harassed her.
This case highlights the tension between fans, fighters, and promoters in mixed martial arts (MMA). While Ardelean’s case has raised many questions about sexuality in the fight game, it has also highlighted how easily people can be hurt by social media posts.
OnlyFans is a website where fans of the adult entertainment industry can subscribe to the pages of erotic models. The erotic models or sex workers can share and sell the content they create. It also hosts the work of other content creators like physical fitness experts, musicians, and actors.
After the partners of the men she trained with complained about her OnlyFans page, mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Alice Ardelean was forced to change gyms.
Ardelean, 30, moved to Ronin MMA in Birmingham after being subjected to offensive remarks from the wives of her former male training partners. She formed an OnlyFans account to support her desire to fight in the UFC, but her sexy posts got her in trouble at her previous gym.
She told the news, "I used to train at a gym when I started OnlyFans and I kept getting dirty looks. I even had a few messages from wives from guys in the gym saying ‘you are such a whatever’ and calling me names. They were afraid their husbands would subscribe.”
She said she was forced to move gyms to avoid all this drama. “In reality, the only reason why I was doing OnlyFans was to be able to pay for my training, nutritionist and gym equipment every day," she said.
“I was just minding my own business but the hate was there. Some of the hate was nasty and women in the gym were complaining about me. It was just embarrassing. It was like, shut up, I am not here to take your man. This is just my job and I’m not interfering with your job. It’s not my fault if your husband was on my OnlyFans or not.”
Ardelean used to make $700 per month as a security officer, but now she makes over $12,000 per month from her OnlyFans account.
In March of this year, the 7-5 fighter of Romanian ancestry will face off for the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) strawweight championship. She now has a five-fight winning streak after defeating rookie Jenny Line last year. Even though Ardelean lost her most recent match to Zhang Weili, the Chinese superstar, she once competed against.
After experiencing bullying due to her weight, Ardelean began training in mixed martial arts (MMA) for more than ten years. She said: "I used to be bullied because I was a bit chubby.”
“I started doing MMA about 12 years ago because the guys were a bit aggressive and I was scared somebody was going to hurt me. It is really weird because some of my bullies have been sliding into my DMs which is funny. I'm now known in MMA all around the world and popular for having one of the biggest and roundest booties,” she said.
There’s a lot of unfairness in the world of entertainment and social media, but the double standard for women in the industry is particularly difficult to navigate. Why is it that women aren’t held to the same standards as men? Perhaps it has something to do with our societal ideas of beauty and bodies. The image of a woman in the media should be thin, fit, and sexy but not sexual, regardless of her job title.
In response to the unfairness of Alice being judged for her side job choice, we can explore this by discussing the harmful effects of body shaming and slut-shaming. These two types of victim-blaming are prevalent online and offline, and they unfairly target women who are not perceived as “slender or thin” or those who have sex or show skin online. This incident can be a learning opportunity for everyone involved. Why not embrace different shapes and sizes? How about creating spaces where women feel accepted regardless of their job title, body type or sexual activity? Then perhaps we can create an environment where everyone feels valued and respected for their unique individuality.
