This year I had the honor and privilege to teach at Indiana's premier trial practice school. I taught there once before the pandemic and this was my first time since the pandemic. It's an intensive week of training.
The Indiana Public Defender Council (IPDC) is a statewide agency that provides support and training to public defenders in Indiana. One of their key initiatives is the Trial Practice Institute (TPI), which offers comprehensive training for public defenders on the art of trial practice.
The TPI is an intensive program that includes lectures, workshops, and simulated trials. The goal is to provide public defenders with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively represent their clients in court. Participants will gain valuable insight into topics such as witness examination, opening and closing statements, and evidence presentation.
The program is held annually (this year it was in Brown County from April 23-28) and is open to all public defenders who are affiliated with the IPDC. The curriculum is tailored to meet the needs of both new and experienced public defenders, with a focus on skills that are applicable to both civil and criminal cases.
One of the unique features of the TPI is the emphasis on hands-on training. Participants have the opportunity to practice what they learn in simulated trials, where they receive feedback and guidance from experienced instructors. This experiential learning approach allows participants to develop their skills in a safe and supportive environment.
In addition to the training itself, the TPI also provides a valuable networking opportunity. Participants get to meet and collaborate with other public defenders from around the state, building relationships and sharing ideas.
The TPI is just one example of the many resources that the IPDC provides to public defenders in Indiana. By investing in the professional development of public defenders, the IPDC is helping to ensure that all defendants have access to high-quality legal representation, regardless of their financial situation.
Overall, the Trial Practice Institute is an essential program for public defenders who are committed to providing effective representation to their clients. It provides them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to handle even the most complex cases. If you are a public defender in Indiana, I strongly encourage you to consider participating in the next installment of the TPI.
