HANCOCK COUNTY, Indiana — A major two-vehicle car crash near Greenfield has resulted in one person's death and two other people being hurt.
Around 2:10 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, US40 near Washington Street between Cumberland and Greenfield received a report from the Hancock County Sheriff's Department regarding a car accident
.
Two automobiles were involved in the collision: a 2022 Volkswagen Atlas and a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe. Mauro Rosalino-Gonzalez, 39, of Greenfield, who was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to the HCSD, was the driver of the Hyundai. The deceased did not appear to be using a seatbelt at the time of the collision, according to the authorities.
Christopher Wampler, 46, and Kelly Poag, 45, the drivers of the Volkswagen, were sent to Methodist Hospital. They had injuries that weren't life-threatening. As investigators from law enforcement arrived on the site, they responded to queries.
According to HCSD, a preliminary examination into the collision showed that the Hyundai was in the left lane of US 40. It was traveling westbound when it approached a car that was stopped. The stopped car was trying to turn left into Washington Village Apartments.
In an effort to avoid the stopped vehicle, the Hyundai swerved to the left, onto the eastbound high-speed lane of US 40, and into oncoming traffic. The Hyundai and Volkswagen collided at this precise instant. The car that was waiting to turn wasn't a part of the car crash collision.
The driver of the car that was attempting to turn into the Washington Village Apartments was still there. The driver responded to inquiries.
No drugs seem to have been involved in this car crash accident collision.
During the two hours when the Hancock County Fatal Accident Crash Team's investigation took place, US 40 remained shut down.
