1. The Tragedy of Nex Benedict 

The year began with the heartbreaking loss of Nex Benedict, a transgender teen from Oklahoma. Nex’s death, ruled as a suicide following an altercation at school, became a rallying cry for LGBTQ activists, shining a harsh spotlight on the rise of anti-transgender legislation and targeted hostility. 


Advocates across the country have used Nex’s story to amplify calls for better mental health resources for trans youth and policies that protect—rather than marginalize—the LGBTQ community. 


2. Sarah McBride Makes History 

Sarah McBride broke boundaries as the first openly transgender person elected to Congress, winning Delaware’s sole House seat. Her win is a landmark achievement for transgender representation in American politics. 


Despite taking on this historic role, McBride has already faced opposition, including proposed congressional rules targeting her gender identity. Through it all, she remains steadfast in her mission of breaking partisan gridlock and fighting for equality.
